BORN IN THE BACKCOUNTRY
BUILT IN A BARN

TOBE was born in the backcountry of Northern Sweden at the intersection of motorsports and boardsports.
From the very beginning in 2001, we have focused all our energy on creating style- forward, technical garments that excel at keeping the wearer warm, dry and safe.
A few things have changed over the years, but most things haven’t.
TOBE is still family-owned and operated out of the more than 100-year-old barn on the same property as Tomas’ childhood home. We continue to design and manufacture premium products because winter is our passion, and we intend to use them. We’re still a small team. You’re going to get a real person on the phone when you call us for help. We have always pushed the limits of innovation and style, and we don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.

Thanks for joining us on this journey.
We look forward to introducing you to the next chapter.

HISTORY

Let us tell you the story, from the very beginning.

HELMETS

TOBE X AIROH HELMETS

A strategic partnership 20 years in the making.
Our team has been wearing Airoh Helmets since the very beginning of our days on snowmobiles and snowbikes. Partnering with the legendary Italian helmet manufacturer Airoh has given us the exclusive privilege to customize our own line for TOBE and bring our tribe of riders their new favorite helmet.

TERMINATOR HELMET

TERMINATOR HELMET

The TOBE + Airoh Terminator helmet is one of the lightest snowmobile helmet in existence. All of our safety and comfort features are designed to allow all-day play. The Aluminum Double D Retention System on the buckle protects your head while the Airoh Emergency System ensures quick and easy removal of the cheek pads without damaging the shell. The inner lining is removable and washable and comes standard with a factory sanitized hygiene treatment which means you can clean every inch of your helmet. The revolutionary airflow system provides you with three rear heat extractors and two front ventilations.

With the cheek pads absent, the helmet can be gently removed from an injured rider's head with minimal load being placed on his or her neck.

TWO SHELL SIZES

We offer two shell sizes to ensure an optimal fit on various head sizes. Producing multiple shell sizes adds cost to the manufacturer but it ensures the helmets fit correctly, offers maximum safety and contributes to keeping the helmet lightweight.

BALACLAVAS

Presentation

The light balaclava is made of soft comfortable fleece with a foldable top, making it the perfect all around balaclava. And where the light is not enough, the heavy steps in. A technical balaclava that is made to withstand the harshest conditions to protect against frost bite, while still making it easy to breathe during active riding. Both the Light and Heavy Balaclavas are ergonomically designed to pair with the Terminator and Vale helmets.

GOGGLES

INTRODUCING GOGGLES

Our goggles were born out of a natural consumer demand and brand progression to produce the best quality products in the market. After we partnered with Airoh to bring you the lightest snowmobile helmet in the industry, our athletes and customers naturally asked us for goggles as well. With a goal of providing a best-in-class peripheral vision, our goggles were developed in cooperation with the some of the world’s best athletes. Several years of testing, tweaking and improving resulted in a design truly game changing. We developed two pairs of goggles with our Flawless Fit™ technology that fits flawlessly into our helmets. This ensures minimal exposure to the elements. Our goggles offer a maximum field of vision, supreme optimal clarity, triple face foam comfort and multi treatment antifog 4 times that of the competition ensuring your days are fog free. Elevate your vision with our goggles.

THE EXTREME CONTRAST LENS

Born and raised in the north. Shaped and molded by harsh and unforgiving environments. Developed by riders who require comfort, enhanced visibility and an absolute perfect fit. Introducing the TOBE Arctic Vision Lens.

The TOBE Arctic Vision is a unique lens, designed and developed to suit the flat light weather conditions of the north that reduce your eyes’ ability to distinguish contrast. For example, it’s difficult to distinguish colors between the blue and green, and the green and red wavelengths. These crossovers are blocked by the Arctic Vision lens, providing the wearer greater contrast and clarity in snowy terrain. By removing some aspects of the color spectrum, we greatly improve your vision and performance.

VIOLET

Innovative allround lens with game changing characteristics. The recipe pops the contrasts and blocks the faded colors in between. The lens is a violet filt.cat 2 lens. It cuts out parts of red light and vastly enhances flat light visibility. Additionally, it also blocks out destructive UV-light.

The filt.cat 2 makes this a great lens in every environment and every weather condition. Glare from the sun is cut by the multi-coated color. Compared to the Orange lens, this lens works best in varying weather conditions.

ORANGE

Hydrophobic, Oleophobic, and Anti-Fog Groundbreaking filt.cat 1 lens that enhances contrasts and blocks out destructive UV light. These lenses cut out the blurry light in between the clear colors. Leaving the clear colors gives your eyes more comfort and better vision. The experience is that your visual perception is boosted and you see contrasts more clearly. The soft and relaxing amber color gives your eyes the relaxation and contrast needed to keep focused all day long, especially in badweather conditions.

REVELATION GOGGLE

REVELATION GOGGLE

A thin and aggressive frame encompasses the large cylindrical lens to avoid obstructing any visibility. The slight forward facing tilt of the lens increases the peripheral view in the vertical axis to enable higher performance in the most demanding situations. Precise and adjustable outriggers ensure the goggle fits comfortably against the face regardless of helmet used. To increase comfort, the Revelation goggle is equipped with three layers of soft foam. The varied density of the foam softens the pressure applied to the face while sealing the eyeport. The outer layer is made of a soft, fabric like material which reduces the friction against the skin to enhance comfort. It also has several well-positioned ventilation passages to maximize the air circulation without disturbing the wearer.

GLOVES

Have you ever stopped to appreciate the complexity and importance of your hands and fingers?

While designing our collection of gloves, we spent hours upon hours analyzing exactly how the hand moves.
We did this to ensure all of our gloves maximize the utility and dexterity of your hands, while keeping them warm, dry and safe. While we make a wide range of gloves for every type of rider and riding condition, all of our gloves share the same technical features and design philosophy that makes them uniquely TOBE.

PITTARDS

The world ́s best leather comes from Pittards in England.
The leather in TOBE ́s Sympatex gloves uses Pittard ́s Armor-tan technology, meaning the fibers in the leather are reinforced with microscopic ceramic plates. The result is leather that is up to 25% stronger than regular leather.

ARMOR-TAN® FOR A NEW GENERATION OF BACKCOUNTRY PERFORMANCE

The fibril bundles in the structure leather are encased by microscopic ceramic ‘armor plates’. This creates leathers that provide more abrasion resistance and durability against wear on contact surfaces. The combined technologies offer multiple performance benefits, such as water and perspiration resistance while the digital surface pattern ensures superior grip in various winter applications.

SYMPATEX 45K

TOBE ́s waterproof gloves utilize the Sympatex 45,000mm membrane and have all the weatherproofing and performance benefits that come with this technology.

BOOTS

Our design philosophy for boots is very simple

45000

mm waterproof

Make boots that are comfortable from day one and protective, warm, dry and reliable for years to come. No, they’re not very colorful, but we don’t think that matters much when they have a reputation for providing exceptional all-around performance on the mountain and the trail. Our proprietary combination of high-quality natural rubber outsoles, a durable leather upper, the highest tensile strength BOA® system, and a refined fit have proven to be a winning formula.

Warm, dependable boots are the foundation for long days on snow. We know all too well that cold feet ruin otherwise perfect days. There’s no escaping the fact that once the feet get cold or wet, the day will inevitably be either long and less enjoyable, or cut short to head indoors in search of respite. We build our boots with the Sympatex® Moisture-Tech membrane, which guarantees superior warmth and waterproofing. The performance is proven both in the lab, during a 14-hour partially submerged walk test, and in the field. To maximize the performance of our snowmobile boots, pair them with Merino Wool socks suited to the day’s conditions to maximize warmth, breathability and moisture-wicking.

JACKETS/BIBS

TOBE HAS NEVER BEEN A TRADITIONAL OUTERWEAR BRAND

45000

mm waterproof

TOBE was conceived at a time and in a culture that embraced the spirit of a mix of winter outdoor sports. Skiing, snowmobiling and snowboarding were all big influences because at the foundation of each of these sports is a deep-burning desire not found anywhere else. It’s the passion to explore uncharted terrain, get that next kick of adrenaline and simply take in the full extent of mother nature’s beauty.

We claim the right to call ourselves a brand of many sports, with our roots stemming from every adrenaline-fueled activity we grew up enjoying. Growing up with people who shared the same mentality formed our design philosophy early on.

Our gear is meant to be (ab)used, and saving costs in our designs by jeopardizing reliability is not tolerated. First and foremost, our gear must be durable. Period.

Fashion is next in the order of importance. We want you to look good, so you feel good. However, that doesn’t mean we’re above adding giant pieces of Kevlar® on top of everything we just designed if that’s the only way to exceed your expectations.

There’s a constant tension between function and aesthetic design. Every time we sit down to create something new, we strive to find a delicate balance between raw functionality and making you the best- looking thing on the mountain.

We come from every imaginable corner of the world. Our backgrounds and preferences for what we eat, what language we speak and how we choose to walk through life couldn’t be more different. Our common bond is our love for the outdoors. We’re your family. We’ve got your back no matter what. Everyone is welcome in our Tribe.

How we build the best gear you’ve ever owned

Designing the best monosuit on the market requires an approach that is rooted in science and enhanced by craftsmanship. We begin by sourcing the best technical fabrics available, and construct each piece of the suit to meet performance standards independently before bringing it all together. Our process ends in the lab, where we test it for waterproofness. Then we double the testing standards. The result is a monosuit guaranteed to keep you comfortable in any terrain, in any conditions.

Constructed for the toughest conditions on earth

A winter storm can produce some of the harshest conditions on the planet. Biting cold. Wind that cuts through you. That’s why all TOBE gear is made from materials that outlast and outperform your run-of-the-mill athletic gear—the same 100% windproof, abrasion-resistant and waterproof materials used in military-grade gear and bulletproof vests. Our suits can be repeatedly washed and have no “pores” to clog, and yet they are optimally breathable. Sympatex is also kinder to the environment due to its recyclable qualities.

How waterproofness is measured

A waterproofness rating tell us how much water pressure a material can manage before leaking. For example, a 10,000mm rating means that 10,000mm of water can be suspended over a 1”x1” square of fabric before it starts to leak. Higher numbers mean better ratings, and in an industry that takes these rating very seriously, TOBE’s ratings are as serious as it gets.

Waterproof to 45,000mm

Nothing ruins a day faster than having wet gear on a storm day, or feeling water seep through from a wet chairlift. Sympatex has a 45,000mm waterproof rating—a number you’re not likely to see printed on other technical fabrics. And it doesn’t just keep you dry—it can be stretched up to 300% in any direction and is extremely breathable.

Wrist gaiters built for comfort and waterproofness

Laser cut nylon wrist gaiters. Welded seams blended with comfortable sleek construction that wicks moisture and dries quickly. Keeps snow out whether you wear an undercuff or gauntlet style glove.

Under-arm vents designed for ease and customization

This jacket features classic under-arm vents with double zippers, making them easy to open, close, and adjust the size of the vent.

Looks like bib and jacket, acts like a monosuit.

We’ve designed attachment points on the the snowskirt and bibs that make a full-seal, much like a monosuit. This feature won’t stop you from wiping out, but it will make cartwheeling down the hill in waist-deep powder a little more pleasant.

The feature you’ll be shocked no-one’s thought of before

In the most technologically advanced age in history, most outerwear still requires us to take our phone out of our pockets. Our silicone smart-pocket is touch-friendly, helping you stay connected and communicate faster, so that you can spend less time pulling your phone out and more time having fun.

A multi-purpose hood built for any adventure

We wanted to design a jacket that could adapt to every winter backcountry adventure without having to sacrifice sport-specific features. So when it came to designing a hood, our goal was to construct one that had a functional purpose even when it wasn’t being used. The result is a perfectly fitted hood that protects your face when you need it, and keeps snow from creeping in or building up under your helmet when you don’t.

Why two zippers are better than one

A collar that is too tight feels constrictive. One that’s too loose can be cold. And a centered zipper under your chin can be jabbing and uncomfortable. That’s why we re-developed this zipper on this jacket 4 times: to design a collar that every rider could customize for the combination of comfort and ventilation.

A hood with options

Life’s about choices. This hood gives you the freedom to choose the configuration that’s most comfortable. Leave it on for extra protection from wind and snow or remove it on warmer days and when you need the extra room. Even stowed away, the collar is designed to seal tightly against the helmet and and keep the elements out.

Why a Jacket is only as good as its ventilation

A snowmobile’s ventilation system is crucial to the machines performance. When the engine overheats, it loses power. Our bodies work similarly—we also need the ability to cool down. So when we designed the ventilation system for this jacket, we drew inspiration from our toys. Micro stretch panels mimic vent screens to keep rain and snow out. And we moved the vents closer to the chest so that they works optimally with backpacks.

How we put toughness to the test

To determine how quickly materials will break down over time, manufacturers use the Martindale abrasion resistance test. A mechanical thumb rubs the surface of the fabric repeatedly until the fibres start to break. 100,000 revolutions is the equivalent of a lifetime of wear and tear. A normal polyester fabric can survive around 25,000 revolutions. Our jackets are made with abrasion resistant rip-proof Cordura fabric that easily passes 100,000 cycles of wear without any sign of broken fibres.

Wrist gaiters built for comfort and waterproofness

Laser cut nylon wrist gaiters. Welded seams blended with comfortable sleek construction that wicks moisture and dries quickly. Keeps snow out whether you wear an undercuff or gauntlet style glove.

How this jacket adapts

This jacket has a removable snow skirt that can form a tight seal with the bib. Remove it entirely and leave it at home on drier days to reduce bulk, or use the “transport mode” buttons to tuck it away for your next powder day.

Because you can never have too many pockets

With 4 external pockets, a goggle-specific pocket and a smart-pocket for your phone, this suit has storage for all your adventure essentials—and then some. Remembering which pocket you put things in is up to you.

Most bibs are built with thin, unsupported suspenders.

Like loggers—who spend their days bending, lifting, cutting and hauling—we consider a good pair of suspenders crucial to our performance. Our custom-constructed harness is padded for comfort, have three adjustments points to keep everything in place, and have two thoughtfully-placed radio clips. The mesh panel between the shoulder blades gives you a more ergonomic fit without sacrificing breathability. Our suspenders are as rugged as the terrain we ride in.

Adjustable waist

These bibs are ready to be used and worn with your own belt. But they also have an adjustable waist made with velcro straps using strong elastic, so you can adjust for a perfect fit.

Only a product manager who rides would know to add this

Unlike on most bibs, our boot gaiters are constructed from extra tough materials that hold up against wear and tear from running boards. You’ll also find Kevlar® Armortex® blend reinforcements on the cuff, which means your pant hem will look as good on day 100 as it did on day 1.

What this bib has in common with a bulletproof vest

We added Kevlar® Armortex® blend reinforcements to the knees and inside of the legs of this bib. This material is one of those magic modern materials that people talk about without really explaining any further. Bulletproof vests are also made with Kevlar, meaning this is the best protection you can have against sharp running boards or trees. And with an added layer of protection, you won’t think twice about taking a knee to fix or maintain your machine.

Big vents for big stucks

While the Sympatex® membrane in your TOBE bibs are designed to dynamically regulate your temperature and allow moisture to escape, we designed the Vivid Bib with over-sized vents so that you can dispense heat quickly when the going gets tough.

Our monosuits are made with abrasion resistant rip-proof Cordura fabric that easily passes 100,000 cycles of wear without any sign of broken fibres.

HOBACK JACKET

Presentation

We’re all about the rush of adrenaline you get ripping down the trail or across a frozen lake. Tradition demands pit stopping at local spots along the ride to catch up with friends and grab some frosty beverages. This jacket and bib combo will keep you warm, dry and safe in the likely event your ride runs after the sun goes down. We designed the Hoback™ to offer solid winter protection that doesn’t break the bank. We made sure this casual parka and bib combines the best of two worlds, with lightweight lofty synthetic insulation to ward off winter’s chillier negative degree weather, and reliable best in industry 45K waterproof protection for whatever old man winter throws at you. Soft baffling lines the interior, keeping valuable body warmth close at hand, and the Sympatex membrane pairs nicely with fully sealed seams to guarantee that you stay dry. We gave the kit a relaxed fit for style, and the jacket features a slightly longer length that’s much appreciated when spending an extended time cruising around town.

Triple protection from the elements

The triple-layer zipper design provides two additional barriers to seal out wind and moisture when you hit the throttle.

Under-arm vents designed for ease and customization

This jacket features classic under-arm vents with double zippers, making them easy to open, close, and adjust the size of the vent.

A small, yet important detail

This is one of those features we hope you never have to use—a small, yet important safety feature. This jacket integrates a strip of mesh designed to allow water to drain out in the unlikely event that you fall through the ice. Your chances of getting to safety will be higher in the Hoback than if you are wearing a jacket that absorbs and holds water.

Because you can never have too many pockets

With 4 external pockets, a goggle-specific pocket and a smart-pocket for your phone, this jacket has storage for all your adventure essentials—and then some. Remembering which pocket you put things in is up to you.

How Thinsulate performs against down

While down retains heat very well, it simply doesn’t breathe. We use water resistant 3M™ Thinsulate™ blown in insulation, a synthetic blend that wicks away moisture and allows heat to dissipate. This keeps you warm like down—yet comfortable and dry—while you’re doing winter chores around the house, running errands, and going on neighborhood adventures.

A collar designed with helmets in mind

The collar is just tall enough to meet the base of your helmet. It’s low-profile design seals out the elements without getting in the way. Lined with fleece for comfort.

Why we use synthetic, blended insulation

Our insulation is made from a blend of different fibres, each with their own unique structure and qualities. Some fibres are added for puffiness, others for thermal efficiency. And while down insulation can clump, this blend of synthetic insulation keeps its shape, even if it goes through the wash.

Why you probably didn’t know you wanted full leg zippers

Most pants don’t have full-zippers down the side, and we imagine you’ve lived a lifetime of getting into your pants just fine without them. But think back to that one day in the parking lot when you put your helmet on and realized you forgot to about your knee pads. Or your leg brace. When that happens, and you are standing in your Hoback Bib will be the moment you remember your leg zips and question how you went so long without them.

Why this bib looks different

This bib is constructed with 3M Scotchlite Carbon reflex material making it look as stealthy as it is rugged.

Only a product manager who rides would know to add this

Unlike most bibs, our boot gaiters are constructed from extra tough materials that hold up against wear and tear from running boards.

Double Stitching with TOBE Spider Silk™

When it comes to complex design, the most effective solutions often present themselves in nature. Our proprietary spider silk™ stitching was inspired by, arguably, the most experienced and specialized weavers on the planet. Our factories submit each stitch to a strenuous “Tensile Test” that measures stress versus strain to ensure maximum strength so that your suit is prepared to stand up to wear, tear, and the harshest conditions.

How this jacket adapts

This jacket has a removable snow skirt that can form a tight seal with the bib. Remove it entirely and leave it at home on drier days to reduce bulk, or use the “transport mode” buttons to tuck it away for your next powder day.

A collar designed with helmets in mind

The collar is just tall enough to meet the base of your helmet. It’s low-profile design seals out the elements without getting in the way.

We introduced the Iter in 2019 as a shell

This year, we added an optional insulation layer to make it more versatile and introduce it to the midwestern market. The combination makes this a smart choice for weekend warriors and destination travelers who take that one big trip to the mountains every year. The insulation layer is a Primaloft jacket that zips in—but it can also be worn on it’s own.

What the insulation jacket feels like

In short, it feels like a hug. On the outside, it’s smooth to the touch. The outer liner has a thickness to it that won’t leave you wondering how long the jacket will last until it tears. The insulation feels springy, but not spongy. The result is a balance of lightness and ruggedness that just feels good to put on.

MONO SUITS

WHY A MONO SUIT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE

45000

mm waterproof

At heart, we’re all just big kids who want to play in the snow.
We’ve replaced the plastic sleds of our youth with new and more expensive toys—but the feeling’s just the same.
Monosuits gives us the freedom to move without limits and be kids again, but with all the modern features our adult adventures demand.

It’s no wonder our monosuit, re-invented in 2008, continues to be our #1 best seller.

What makes the Ekta women-specific?

While we consider our line of monosuits to be equally comfortable and functional for both men and women, some of you stepped forward asking for a monosuit designed specifically with a woman’s body in mind. We heard you. Using the Macer as our foundation, this suit offers an entirely new fit and design. Adjusted measurements, including more room in the hips, and a drop seat make the Ekta our first official women-specific monosuit.

We built a better dropseat

The majority of monosuits on the market with a drop seat are constructed with an arced zipper that opens from hip to hip. We took that design one step further with a drop seat that unzips almost a full 360 degrees, making it even easier to answer nature’s call.

An intelligent, expandable collar

Behind the zipper, this suit is hiding a simple and elegant design feature: laser-cut vents and an expansion panel. This can be easily configured to provide more room in the collar and allow for more ventilation.

What this suit has in common with a bulletproof vest

We added Kevlar® Armortex® blend reinforcements to the knees and inside of the legs of this suit. This material is one of those magic modern materials that people talk about without really explaining any further. Bulletproof vests are also made with Kevlar, meaning this is the best protection you can have against sharp running boards or trees. Most monosuits are built with thin, unsupported suspenders.

A multi-purpose hood built for any adventure

We wanted to design a monosuit that could adapt to every winter backcountry adventure without having to sacrifice sport-specific features. So when it came to designing a hood, our goal was to construct one that had a functional purpose even when it wasn’t being used. The result is a perfectly fitted hood that protects your face when you need it, and keeps snow from creeping in or building up under your helmet when you don’t.

Only a product manager who rides would know to add this

Unlike most monosuits, our boot gaiters are constructed from extra tough materials that hold up against wear and tear from running boards. You’ll also find Kevlar® Armortex® blend reinforcements on the cuff, which means your pant hem will look as good on day 100 as it did on day 1.

And with an added layer of protection, you won’t think twice about taking a knee to fix or maintain your machine.

The one tiny detail that makes this suit more waterproof

In addition to testing the fabrics we use for waterproofness, we also test the overall construction of our gear in the “rain chamber.” It’s as if we put each of our monosuits through a carwash, and it allows to optimize the design for maximum water-tightness. One such design to result from this is a modified zipper design that captures any moisture that seeps through and funnels it out a tiny drain so that it never reaches your skin. In testing, this nearly invisible feature extended this suits rain chamber rating by an hour.

Because you can never have too many pockets

With 4 external pockets, a goggle-specific pocket and a smart-pocket for your phone, this suit has storage for all your adventure essentials—and then some. Remembering which pocket you put things in is up to you.

Why a monosuit is only as good as its ventilation

A snowmobile’s ventilation system is crucial to the machines performance. When the engine overheats, it loses power. Our bodies work similarly—we also need the ability to cool down. So when we designed the ventilation system for this monosuit, we drew inspiration from our toys. Micro stretch panels mimic vent screens to keep rain and snow out. And we moved the vents closer to the chest so that they works optimally with backpacks.

Why two zippers are better than one

A collar that is too tight feels constrictive. One that’s too loose can be cold. And a centered zipper under your chin can be jabbing and uncomfortable. That’s why we re-developed this zipper on this monosuit 4 times: to design a collar that every rider could customize for the combination of comfort and ventilation.

VIVID V2 MONO SUIT

Presentation

Winter is not for everyone, but we are a unique breed.

Some of us stand on running boards, others in bindings, but we all share the same fundamental needs when it comes to outlasting the elements.
We crave function, simplicity, quality and most of all, performance.

The Vivid series is the answer we’ve been seeking. Inspired from our time spent on snow machines, skis and snowboards, often in the same day, we are proud to present our most functional and versatile Vivid Mono Suit yet.

The Vivid V2 Mono suit are made with abrasion resistant rip-proof Cordura fabric that easily passes 100,000 cycles of wear without any sign of broken fibres.

Why you probably didn’t know you wanted full leg zippers.

Most pants don’t have full-zippers down the side, and we imagine you’ve lived a lifetime of getting into your pants just fine without them. But think back to that one day in the parking lot when you put your helmet on and realized you forgot to about your knee pads. Or your leg brace. When that happens, and you are standing in your Novo V3—that will be the moment you remember your leg zips and question how you went so long without them.

REX V3 MONO SUIT

Presentation

Business in the front, party in the back OR A split personality

During development nicknamed the T-Rex for its bomb-proof construction, the Rex monosuit is our most durable design yet. We started with a 3-layer shell—with a tough outer layer, waterproof/breathable membrane, and interior lining—and then we reinforced the high-wear areas with Armortex Kevlar®, reinforced the seams, and added double-stitching throughout. The Rex is designed to hold up to years of sitting on chairlifts, bombing tree lines, and resisting abuse from snowmobiling. Do not hold back.

This suit is mostly black. Black like steel, carbon fiber, and the most durable materials on earth. Until you open it up. On the inside, it’s bright like fire.

What separates this suit from the others

This suit is made with 3-Layer laminated Sympatex Noorvik fabric, making it thicker and more heavy duty than our other designs. It makes you feel immortal when you put it on—but we don’t recommend testing that theory.

LAYERING

LAYERING

It’s easy to put all the focus on the bright and fancy stuff you wear on top but, let’s not forget about the boring lessons any outdoors woman or man eventually will learn. While we make both shells and insulated gear we think it is equally important to talk about the different layers you should wear underneath. Dressing in layers is the tried and true way of staying dry and warm regardless of you’re in the mountains, enjoying the challenging conditions above the arctic circle or roaming the trails on the vast and open prairie.

PRIMUS MERINO SHIRT/PANT

Presentation

PRIMUS MERINO SHIRT/PANT

More than any other layer, the base layer helps regulate your body temperature by moving perspiration away from your skin. Trapped inside your clothing, perspiration can leave you chilled or damp no matter how well your shell layer fends off rain and snow. Keeping dry is important for maintaining a cool body temperature in the summer and avoiding hypothermia in the winter. If you’ve ever worn a cotton T-shirt under your raincoat while hiking, you probably remember feeling wet and clammy, even though you weren’t getting wet from the rain itself. Cotton is an example of a fabric that retains perspiration and can leave you vulnerable to unwanted chills. For outdoor comfort, your base layer should be made of merino wool. Rather than absorbing moisture, these fabrics transport (or ”wick”) perspiration away from your skin, dispersing it on the outer surface where it can evaporate. The result: You stay drier even when you sweat, and your shirt dries faster afterwards.

Natural insulation and warmth

Merino wool provides natural insulation that allows the body to retain heat and maintain higher comfort levels. The natural crimp of merino fiber enables it to keep heat close to the body by trapping tiny air pockets within the fibers.

Comfort and breathability

Merino wool is a moisture-wicking fiber. It draws moisture away from the skin, releases it into the air or the next layer of clothing. This helps to regulate body temperature, keeping the body warm in cold weather and cool if it is hot. It will absorb up to a third of its weight in water without feeling clammy and retains some of its warmth even when very wet.

Odour free

Merino wool is an anti-microbial material and, as a result, has natural resistance to odour. Due to this fact, Merino garments do not need to be washed as often as synthetics. In fact you may just hang it out for the night when smelly.

Merino vs synthetic

Synthetic fibers such as polypropylene & polyester have a much simpler structure than natural wool fibers. These petroleum based fabrics do not absorb or release moisture and cannot breathe due to the simpler construction of synthetic fibres. When knitted into fabric, they are limited to one-way moisture movement - simply no comparison to the superb insulation elements of merino wool.

Merino vs traditional wool

Compared to traditional wool, merino is a smoother and finer fiber, which gives it a vastly superior texture and handle compared to traditional coarse wools. The smooth silk-like feel ensures the wearer will enjoy an ’itch-free’ experience, even on sensitive skin.

OVIS MERINO MID LAYER
The insulating layer helps you retain heat by trapping air close to your body. Polyester fleece vests, jackets and tights are classic examples of insulation ideal for outdoor activities. They not only trap air but are also made with moisture-wicking fibers to help keep you dry. Natural fibers such as wool and goose down are excellent insulators. Wool sweaters and shirts (especially the new generation of merino wool products) offer soft, reliable warmth and keep on insulating even when wet.
